Legal Directories & Local Citations

A prospective client rarely stops at Google. They check Avvo ratings, they look for Super Lawyers recognition, they see whether your Google Business Profile has recent reviews. Kenzsys tracks your firm's presence across the legal directories and citation sources that actually matter, and — for the directories where it makes sense — checks each of your attorneys individually, not just the firm as a whole.

Legal directory and local citation status

Why attorney-level checking matters

For most of the web, checking "the firm" is enough. Legal directories don't work that way. Two things make attorney-level checking necessary rather than optional:

  • State bar directories have no concept of a "firm" record. A state bar licenses individual attorneys, not firms — every record on a bar directory is one attorney's licensure. Searching a bar directory for your firm's name used to return close to nothing useful. Kenzsys now checks each of your active attorneys individually against your state bar directory, because that's the only way the check can return anything meaningful.
  • An individual attorney's profile can be stronger than the firm's. On sites like Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell, a firm profile and an individual attorney's profile exist independently of each other. It's common for one of your attorneys to have a well-reviewed, fully-built-out personal profile while the firm's own page on the same site sits half-finished, or the other way around. A firm-name-only search would miss whichever one wasn't checked.

So Kenzsys checks each directory according to what it actually indexes:

  • Attorney-only. Your state bar member directory. Kenzsys checks each active attorney at your firm individually.
  • Both firm and attorney. Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell. Kenzsys checks your firm's own profile and runs one check per active attorney, so a strong individual profile is never missed just because the firm name alone was searched.
  • Firm-only. FindLaw, Yelp, Legal.io, and Google Business Profile. These directories list businesses, not individual attorneys, so Kenzsys checks the firm the same way it always has.

The result is a far more complete picture of your directory presence than a firm-name search alone could ever produce, especially for multi-attorney firms.

Directories Kenzsys tracks

  • Avvo — firm and attorney profiles.
  • Justia — firm and attorney profiles.
  • FindLaw — firm profile only.
  • Martindale-Hubbell — firm and attorney profiles.
  • Super Lawyers — firm and attorney profiles.
  • Yelp — firm profile only.
  • Legal.io — firm profile only.
  • Google Business Profile — firm profile only.
  • Your state bar member directory — attorney profiles only, one per active attorney.

Listing status

Every directory (and, where relevant, every attorney profile on it) shows one of four statuses, along with a specific recommendation for improving it:

  • Listed & Optimized — a profile exists and is fully filled out.
  • Listed but Incomplete — a profile exists but is missing key details, like a bio, photo, or practice areas. Kenzsys tells you what to add.
  • Not Listed — no profile was found. The recommendation is to claim one.
  • Not Checked — Kenzsys hasn't run a check for this directory yet, or the directory can't be checked automatically.

Local Citations (NAP consistency)

Separate from directory listing status, Kenzsys checks your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) for consistency across the web. Unlike directory listings, Local Citations checks always stay firm-level — NAP consistency is a fact about your business as a whole, not about any one attorney, so there's no attorney-level breakdown here regardless of what a given directory's identity scope is elsewhere. Inconsistent NAP data (an old suite number on one site, a different phone number on another) confuses both search engines and AI answer engines about which listing is authoritative, so keeping it identical everywhere is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort fixes available.

Where to start: Work through "Not Listed" firm profiles first, since those are complete gaps, then move to "Listed but Incomplete" attorney profiles for your most active attorneys — those are often the fastest wins.
